Even Dogs Have Ambitions

Saturday I was over at my friend's house for a BBQ, and I witnessed this amazing dog balancing a ball on his nose. He would literally take a basketball, get up on his nose using the fence, and then balance it, bounce it, and juggle it all the while moving all four legs, in a kind of joyous dance. The expression on his face during this dance is priceless; he looks like he's doing what he truly loves.

The cool thing about this dog is that - according to his owner - he was never trained to perform this stunt. He is an "outdoor" dog, so he spends all his time outside and he invented this game as a way to keep himself preoccupied. My friend tells me that he sees the dog practice regularly, often for 30 minutes or more per session. His stunts are actually improving too - he regularly attempts a spin move where he flips the ball up, spins, and then catches it. The video below shows an attempted spin move at the end, but he doesn't quite get it.

It's actually inspirational to watch a dog do something like this, not because he is being rewarded with treats, but because he just enjoys it and wants to get better. It shows that even in non-humans, there are personalities that strive to better themselves and pick up new talents. If only we were all as diligent as this little pit bull.
